Join the conversation A TEENAGER whose graffiti attacks were branded a blight on Plymouth has been handed a five-year antisocial behaviour order (Asbo). Callum Mead, aged 18, was given a suspended prison sentence for spraying his name or tag in 39 places around the city and Callington. 1. Callum Mead • • • • • • • • • • • • Plymouth magistrates were told that graffiti was on the increase in the city and was costing the council more than £100,000 to clean up. The court heard Mead painted 'Sour' and 'DSK' on houses, vans, walls, fences and lampposts in areas including St Judes, Mutley and Lipson. His mess cost an estimated £2,420 to clean up but the unemployed youngster who lives with his mother was not ordered to pay any compensation. Mead admitted three charges of criminal damage to walls in St Judes overnight on May 6/7. He asked for another 36 similar offences to be taken into consideration. The court heard he was reprimanded for 16 offences of criminal damage in 2007. Magistrates have now given him an eight-week detention sentence suspended for 12 months on condition he does 180 hours of unpaid work. The bench ordered him to pay £85 prosecution costs but said compensation would have to be handled by the civil courts. Presiding magistrate Helen Harris said: "You have been making lives a misery. You have blighted too much of this city and your home town for too long." He was also handed a five-year antisocial behaviour order banning him from having 'unset paint', or spray paint, and permanent marker pens. Mead was told breaching the order could see him sent into custody. Elaine Keen, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said graffiti attacks were reported in St Judes on May 6 and May 7. The Herald reported that unsightly graffiti was scrawled over walls and garage doors at least 40 times over the night of December 30, 2011. move the signatures. PCSO Pablo Beckhurst, who works within the Operation Salus graffiti team, said: "We've been out with the community payback team removing some of the graffiti. They have a fantastic team leader who really does manage the people on community service well. "We targeted the most prolific ones particularly on the junctions of people's houses. "Removing graffiti as soon as it is done is considered best practice as it promotes a strong community message to taggers that the people in the area care. "Taggers are unlikely to repeatedly tag an area if their work is taken down before others will see it." Police said there had been a marked increase in graffiti tags (signatures) across the South and central area of Plymouth - much of which is unreported. PCSO Beckhurst added: "By their very nature graffiti taggers are difficult to catch, often working alone in the early hours and without reason or apparent motive. "Spraying or writing tags only takes three to four seconds and is virtually silent. They use pseudonyms to hide their identity and reveal these to only a close circle of friends." "Devon and Cornwall Police are committed to tackling tagging and those responsible will be caught and charged. We will push for the strongest possible action." The community payback scheme, which have limited materials, is dedicated to removing the tags. The clean was aided by PCSO Carly Norris and PCSO Beckhurst. 'Post' Subculture Theory

SUBCULTURE THEORY

I have recently been reading Dick Hebridge’s book ..‘SUBCULTURE the meaning of style,’   Sarah Thorton’s , ..‘Seven Days In The Art World’   &  ‘club culture  Music,Media and Subcultural Capital’,   and Nick Knight’s.. ‘SKINHEAD’.
A common theme of describing the notion of  gender, class and race issues , translated through history from an economist and political viewpoint , are the problems in a society that subcultures are perceived to alleviate. Albeit through their own literary influences of Marx  and Levi-Strauss to reach this conclusion seems evident.
Semiotics , bricolage , homology and hegemony as depicted by Gramsci are all  means for their explanation of cultural practices in a post-modern society.
This continuing argument puts forward mixed ideas of subcultural theory based on delinquency and deviant behaviour constituted as a sociologically reason to lead to style being a collective solution caused by a structural problem. Whether it is metaphorically rebellion by working class communities of  parental   beliefs or  increased consumerism with post-second world war young people to be drawn into an alternative lifestyle. There seems to be a marked difference in generational consciousness that is only breeds a need for the developing subculture ,even if it’s a conscious or unconscious reaction. This indicates that there is a widening gap of understanding the significant differences in poetic interpretations of a subculture changing a language and to rethink the theory of subculture purely along these lines. Along with the understanding that a middle-class attempt at subculture becomes a counter-culture and society is not so one-dimensional to package the recent past in such a symbolically hybrid way. The attempt to associate marginalised and disconnected youth jumping from a desire to find an answer  and adopting a particular style needs a more subtler appraisal. The acceptance of a theory of post-war capitalism breeding malcontents either sociologically ,politically or economically poses the contradiction in deciphering the current need with sanctuary by contemporary subcultures.
